The Song of the Year award has always been very tricky to predict. One of the biggest misconceptions is that it rewards a song based on the lyrics. But the melody is also plays a major role. We always see diversity here, even more than at Record of the Year. And for the last three years we’ve seen some rather unknown singer-songwriters making the cut. I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t get any of this right. I usually do 2/5.
Sure bets are: LGBT-themed “Same Love” co-written by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert and samples Curtis Mayfield’s song “People Are Ready”; Justin Timberlake’s love song “Mirrors”; and the cynical Southern U.S. track “Merry Go ‘Round” by Kacey Musgraves.
