60th GRAMMY Predictions: Best New Artist

BNA-predictions

The 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards are just around the corner. Nominations will be announced, earlier than usual, on November 28th. The ceremony will take place in New York on January 28th, 2018.

And while we wait it is time to take a look at the possible nominees, in one of the ‘Big Four’ categories: Best New Artist.

In this category, all but one of the five major contenders of the year are not ‘new’. But that’s not uncommon in this award. It takes an artist years to get established, unless you are… Lorde? Yes, there are always exceptions but this year is not the case.

Predictions (in order of likelihood of being nominated)

  1. Alessia Cara
  2. Khalid
  3. James Arthur
  4. Jon Pardi
  5. Logic

Alessia Cara

Established since 2015; had two major hits during the eligibility period; the most mainstream among the submitted artists; internationally known star; collaborated with GRAMMY winner, Zedd; her songs often reflect social awareness topics; has received other major awards (2 Juno and one VMA).

Khalid

Established since 2016; debut album actually released during the eligibility period and certified platinum; two major hits during the eligibility period; internationally known star; will take the ‘urban’ spot; have collaborated with GRAMMY winner, Lorde; received the VMA for Best New Artist; most likely to get nominated in other fields (pop, R&B); his songs are also socially-driven.

James Arthur

Established since 2013 (in the UK); had his first U.S. hit during the eligibility period; there’s always a British blue-eyed soul singer in this category; currently nominated for American Music Awards.

Jon Pardi

Established since 2013; winner of the Country Music Association Award for Best New Artist; the most likely to take the established ‘country spot’ in this category; had two long-running singles in the country music charts.

Logic

Established since 2013; mainstream-friendly ‘rapper’; his music is categorized as ‘conscious hip-hop’; hitting the charts during the right time; had a  number one-charting album in the Billboard 200.

Other possible nominated artists: SZA, Sampha, Cardi B, Julia Michaels and Noah Cyrus.

What do you think? Who would be your nominees for Best New Artist?
